Chapter 5. Resource Types

Resource types are basically categories that are used to organize and control access to resources. Resources are the actual physical objects that patrons use, and resource types are the virtual objects to which they belong.

This chapter describes how to work with resource types.

5.1. Related topics

5.2. Creating a resource type

Who can do this

Any opererator with the Manage resources capability.

For information on creating new resource types, please see the Administrator's manual section, Creating Resource Types.

5.3. Setting resource type circulation policies

Who can do this

Any opererator with the Manage resource types capability.

Circulation policies that are set for a resource type override any checkout center or organization circulation policies that would otherwise apply to it. You can set these policies when you first create a resource type, or you can edit existing ones.

Procedure 5.1. To set resource type circulation policies

  1. Click the

banner icon to open the Find Resources screen.

If you are creating a new resource type, click the find resource types form link to open the Find Resource Types screen. Click the Create a new resource type link to open the Resource Type Detail screen.

If you are changing an existing resource type circulation policy, do a search for the resource type you want to edit. Click the resource Type link to open the Resource Type Detail screen.

  2. Click the Policy tab, where the resource type's circulation policies are stored.

If the policies are the defaults, they are labeled as such.

If the default policies have been changed you can restore them by clicking on the Restore to default link.

  3. Set the policy values as desired, clicking the Save button in each policy section before moving on to the next.

The policies that can be set in this tab include the patron class, usage fees, fines for late returns, circulation limits and intervals.

  4. To restore a value to its default (based on the organization limit values), click its Restore to Org Default link.

5.4. Setting resource type fines

Who can do this

Any operator with the Manage fines capability.

Procedure 5.2. To set the fine on a resource type

  1. Click the

banner icon to open the Find Resources screen.

  2. Enter the resource type whose fine amount you want to set and click the Find Resources button.

Search results are displayed in the right frame.

  3. Click the resource Type link to open the Resource Type Detail screen.

  4. Go to the Limits tab.

  5. Check the Patron Class. Fines are a policy setting and thus can be set for different patron classes. If a patron's class doesn't have a particular setting on the resource type, the "Other" class will be used. See Section 1.5, “Understanding circulation policies” for more information.

  6. Enter the amount of the fine into the Fine Rate field, and specify its frequency (by the minute, hour, or day). Specify the Fine Grace Period if applicable.

  7. When you're done, click the Save button to save your changes.

5.5. Finding the fine amount for a resource type

Who can do this

All operators.

Fines are controlled on the resource type in order to make it easier to manage resources. This section describes how to find out what the fine amount is for a particular resource type.

  1. Click the

banner icon to open the Find Resources screen.

  2. Enter the resource type ID or Name, and click the Find Resources button.

Search results are displayed in the right-hand frame.

  3. Click the resource Type link to open the Resource Type Detail screen.

The Fine Amount is specified in the Limits tab, in the field labeled Fines for Late Return.

5.6. Editing a resource type

Who can do this

Any opererator with the Manage resource types capability.

Procedure 5.4. To change a resource type's parent type

  1. Click the

banner icon to open the Find Resources screen.

  2. Click the Find Resource types form link to open the Find Resource Types screen.

  3. Find the resource type you need to change.

If you know its name, enter it in the Name text box, specify an Organization if you need to, and click the Find Resources button.

If you don't know it's name, the default search will return all resource types in all of your organizations if you click Find Resources without making any changes.

Search results are displayed in the right frame.

  4. In the results, click on the resource type's Name link to open the Resource Type Detail screen. The current parent resource type is named in the left frame.

  5. Click on the Admin tab.

  6. From the Action drop-down list, select Move to a different parent type, and then click the Done button.

The Find Resource Types screen reopens, displaying the results from your previous search.

  7. This time, select or search for a resource type to set as the parent of the resource type you're editing, and click on its Name link.

The Resource Type Detail screen re-opens. Verify that the new parent resource type is named in the left frame.

It's not necessary to click the Done button again.

5.7. Deleting a resource type

Resource types cannot be deleted if they have child resource types or resources. You would first have to delete or move the resource and resource types under the resource type you want to delete.

Who can do this

Any opererator with the Manage resource types capability.

Procedure 5.5. To delete a resource type

  1. Locate the resource type you want to delete as described in Section 5.6, “Editing a resource type”.

  2. Select the Admin tab.

  3. Under Actions, if the resource type is deletable, you will see an link, Delete this type.... If you do not see this option, that means that the resource type you are viewing has other resource types or resources under it. You must delete those resource types and/or resources first.

  4. Click on Delete this type.... You will see a notice in the status area that the resource type has been deleted, and will be delivered back to Find Resource Types.
